The Reveal - Sparrow Restaurant
In our new series, The Reveal, we go behind closed doors and get up-close-and-personal with the folks opening their new restaurants.
This week, we enter Sparrow Restaurant.
The Gist: Sparrow took over the former family resto, Dr. Generosity. And vastly changed and improved it. Brought to us by the same owners of neighbouring resto The Kennedy.
Grub: A local and seasonal focused menu served on small, sharing plates might sound like what every other restaurant is doing. But these guys have a very playful, fun and inventive take on the food and presentation.
Libations: A hefty wine list features international varietals by the glass and bottle, and cocktails (created by co-owner Suzanne Derbyshire) such as the Vanilla Fig Old Fashioned and a Truffle Martini.
‘Hood: Bloor West Village/High Park
Deets: The charming space has been completely revamped with a cozy, yet open floor plan with bar area at the front. The room seats 70 and offers large harvest tables – one accommodates a group of 10, the other, a group of 12.
Fixtures & Fittings: A wall-size chalkboard lists the daily specials, a tin ceiling shimmers in the candlelight and a stained glass window featuring the Sparrow logo in full-colour, hangs between the bar and dining room.
Off the Menu: Shrimps ($11) are done like pogos in a thick cornmeal batter and served on an ashtray (clean, of course), and a lean pork belly ($20) as big as a steak, is done with espresso and stout, and topped with house pickles, made to look like a garden bed.
Each dish ordered comes out on a different kind of plate – one dish is served on a old-fashioned manual glass juicer!
