My show, Portraits on Paper, is all about biography, memoir and real life stories. I think that capturing truths and memories onto paper and into spoken word is one of the most powerful forms of writing. Books of this nature continue to sell because we are fascinated by stories that we can learn from, that we can relate to and that we can experience as if they are our own.
I am often asked about the different between memoir and biography. I’ll let Gore Vidal get this one. He said, “A memoir is how one remembers one’s own life, while an autobiography is history, requiring research, dates, facts double-checked.”
By focusing on memoirs and biographies, we get to speak about the writing, but also get to delve into the stories of politicians, advocates, environmentalists, singer-songwriters, poets, filmmakers, screenwriters, spoken word artists, visual artists, people from the underground, people otherwise unseen and unheard, changemakers, thrillseekers, protestors, people who have lost or found something and people who have done something worth writing about.
Each show I will bring you guests from different fields and professions, all in the memoir realm. As well, I will tell you about new and old biographies and memoirs that might be of interest and any literary events that are happening around town.
Upcoming guests include Mordecai Richler’s biographer,a documentarian and other exciting authors and memoirists.
