The Reveal – Stadt Café

The Gist

“Food has always been a passion of mine,” says Stadt Café owner Tanya Schoen. It’s no wonder – her family built a successful business on the premise of bringing authentic European breads to the North American market.

Growing up, everything was made from scratch.

“It’s so sad [that] we’re moving so far away from locally produced food. In Europe, everything is local and much more sustainable,” she says.

Struggling to find restaurants that served both healthy and good quality fare, Tanya decided to she’d open one herself.

The restaurant and European-style café, located in the heart of The Junction, is all about “fresh, healthy and flavourful food, using a lot of herbs and spices.”

Grub

The European gourmet brunch and dinner menus may cross a number of continents – Mexico, Jamaica, Hawaii, Argentina, Morocco, Japan, Thailand and India – but everything is made with:

  • Local, seasonal produce supporting local farmers
  • Hormone- and antibiotic-free and pasture roamed meats from the butcher down the block, When the Pig Came Home
  • Non-GMO corn products
  • Free-range poultry and eggs fed only non-GMO feed.

The internationally inspired, locally sourced restaurant features a mostly gluten-free menu (with many vegan and vegetarian dishes as well) with big, artfully plated portions.

Food bursts forth with fresh, unexpected flavours. Get ready – this ain’t yo momma’s boring health food.

Libations

A wide range of cocktails, beer, coffees, juices and fresh herbal sodas are on offer.

And be sure to check out the wine list (gls $8-$12,btls $30-$67), featuring organic wines and prosecco, as well as biodynamic vinos.

Fixtures & Fittings

The 1,500 square feet restaurant got a complete overhaul – including a stunning new open kitchen.

Tanya did much of the work herself, including the drawings of the place.

The restaurant and café boasts different seating areas throughout the large space:

  • A lounge complete with fireplace and communal dining table near the front
  • Expansive u-shaped booths along the wall adjacent to the bar
  • Café, courtyard area in the back washed in light from a skylight that Tanya installed and exposed brick walls lined with plants, prints and fascinating architectural finds.

The space is a pleasing mix of old and new, with reclaimed wood and porcelain tiles from Spain, salt lamps and gas fittings on shelves.

You might plan on coming in for a quick coffee or meal, but no doubt you’ll linger in this comfortable, light space.

Off the Menu

Asian Slaw ($15) A salad that eats like a meal. A towering pile of crunchiness-napa cabbage, red cabbage, crispy rice noodles, beets, spiralized zucchini, radishes, cilantro, bean sprouts, peanuts and coconut – dressed in a vibrant “sling” vinaigrette of coconut and lemongrass.

Ceviche de Pescado ($17) Thick cod is nestled in a modern composition of jicama, tamatillo, red onions, cilantro, radishes, serrano and agave, set atop avocado crema. The citrus vinaigrette packs a punch. Served with homemade salted tortilla chips. Note: This is no longer on the menu. Enjoy the Scallop Crudo instead.

Beef Stadt Open Faced Sliders ($13 for 3 pcs) If you haven’t heard of sweet potato toast, this is your chance to try the sensation that’s swept the Internet. Ground beef, Swiss, onions sprouts, baby greens and leek confit aioli sit atop a tender, tantalizing sweet potato base. Note: A vegetarian/vegan version ($12) is also available.

Tom Yum Gai ($17) A healthy warm-up consisting of chicken, tofu, oyster mushrooms, bok choy, bean sprouts, cilantro, lime leaves and rice noodles bobbing in a vegetable broth bursting with fragrant lemon grass.

Beef Panang Curry ($18) Dig into a comforting pot of house-made spicy red coconut curry with tender chunks of beef, red peppers and green beans, topped with toasted almond sliced. Served with rice pilaf, studded with currents and raisins. Note: Also available with Tofu ($12).
