Open/Closed: week of December 13-19, 2018

OpenClosed week of December 13-18, 2018.jpg

Clear your schedule, you’ve got a lot of eating to do this weekend.

I’ve got 12 new spots with pizza, cheese tarts, rotis, goat, palettas, mammouls… Better grab your stretchy pants. You’re gonna need ‘em.

Here’s the very latest:

Folks in the College/Bathurst area - including the good doctors, nurses and staff of Toronto Western Hospital - have a new option for healthy meals this week, thanks to the arrival of Basil Box (410 Bathurst St., Unit 114).

Freshly baked goods including baklava, mammouls, and The Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes, can be yours at Crown Pastries’ new location in Mississauga (5083 Dixie Rd, Unit D3).

Eggstatic Artisan Breakfast & Lunch has touched down in Leaside (1568 Bayview Ave.) .

Handcrafted wood-fired oven pizza is the name of the game at Bloor West Village’s GATTO Wood Oven Pizza (2312 Bloor St. W.). Doors opened Sunday.

Guac Mexi Grill (70 World Dr., Unit 5) has burritos, tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, nachos, taco salad, and salad on deck in Mississauga.

Yes, KANDL Artistique (88 Avenue Road) is a luxe candle store in Yorkville, but hold up - they also boast a café offering specialty teas, coffee, and “unique Parisienne inspired pastries.”

Parkdale lost beloved roti shop Bacchus Roti at the end of October, but rejoice– rotis are back, this time by My Roti Place (1376 Queen St. W.), with vegan options, to boot.

Naija Jollof (7205 Goreway Dr., Upper Level) - the first African/Nigerian restaurant to open in a food court in Canada - is serving up asun goat (spicy roast goat), akara (bean fritters), roasted plantain with red sauce, and other delights in Mississauga.

Shh. Niuda Hand-Pulled Noodles (204 Queen St. W.)  has “softly” opened.

If freshly baked cheese tarts make your mouth water, head to PABLO Cheesetart’s newest outpost at Fairview Mall (1800 Sheppard Ave., Level 2)

PalettAmerica Canada’s natural palettas - complete with dips and toppings – are now available at Scarborough Town Centre (300 Borough Dr.).

The Pizza Forno is back. The automatic pizza oven will be spitting out ‘za at Bay and Bloor (1235 Bay St.) tomorrow at 4pm. Stay tuned: eight more locations are set to follow, including one at Dixie Outlet Mall.

In the last few weeks there was talk that due to a number of factors, Los Colibris and El Caballito (220 King St. W.) would close in December. They indeed have.

The 1st Annual Nog Your Socks Off event kicks off tomorrow, and you don’t want to miss it. From December 14-21, enjoy egg nog by Civil Liberties, Famous Last Words Toronto, The Gaslight, and Grey Tiger and raise money for Socks4Souls Canada - a non-profit, volunteer-run organization that provides homeless people with new, clean socks. $1 from each nog “will go towards the purchase of two pairs of socks for members of the homeless community in Southwestern Ontario.”

The 7th Annual Riverside Antler Breakfast returns tomorrow.

Better get your tix now for The Gladstone Hotel’s 12 Beers of Christmas: The Ugly Sweater Edition, taking place December 22.

Toronto landed on The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2019 list by Travel + Leisure Magazine.

Ascari Hospitality Group (Ascari, Gare de l'Est, Table 17 Catering) announced earlier this week they’re opening a second Ascari at King and Portland this spring, this time with a whopping 120-seats.

Pusateri’s is the latest in a string of establishments (Note Bene, Parts & Labour, Luckee, etc.)  to announce closure by year’s end. The Oakville location will shutter on December 31, 2018.

Hear of a place that’s about to open or just closed? Have an upcoming food or restaurant event? Let me know –
