Michelin star and Bib Gourmand designations for Toronto restaurants have snagged the headlines this week, however there’s another selection that earns eateries a place in the global guide.

‘Recommended’ isn’t as widely touted a category and isn’t included in the ‘Distinction’ filter on the Michelin Guide’s website. Instead, you’ll find these restaurants peppered in with the city’s starred and Bib destinations. As for classification and methodology of selections, like most Michelin Guide protocols, it’s largely a mystery. An article on their site, What It Means To Be A Michelin-Recommended Restaurant, includes a loose definition by Michael Ellis, International Director of the Michelin Guide books: “A restaurant in the Recommended selection is the sign of a chef using quality ingredients that are well cooked; simply a good meal. It means that the inspectors have found the food to be above average, but not quite at star or Bib level.”

Michelin inspectors found 44 Toronto establishments of varying price points and duration of operation (some are just months’ old while others have been in business for a decade or more) worthy of the accolade.
